I’ve been unwell today and some of yesterday, and to occupy myself a bit, I watched a documentary on Channel 4. Called “Alone in the Wild”, his features Ed Wardle, a Scottish film-maker, in the Yukon Territory, Canada.
I realise that I seem to start a lot of my posts with “I’ve been unwell”. I don’t know what that’s all about! Hopefully you’re appreciating the increased number of Friday Inspirations that this has brought you!?
Ed Wardle
So, why is this story so inspiring? It had been Ed’s boyhood dream to experience true wilderness on his own, living the way that “humans were designed to live”. Filming everything himself and fending completely for himself, the documentary follows his journey from touch-down to departure.
Far from wanting to experience pure solitude (and all the psychological stuff that comes with it, never mind enjoying porcupine liver), I find this inspiring because here is a man who is actually following his dreams. The documentary is engaging, emotionally charged, breath-takingly honest, and absolutely haunting. In one particular incident, I literally jumped, almost out of my skin! Yikes.
The YouTube link is here. It’s on 4oD at the moment, and National Geographic aired it as well, so if you can’t find it, I can only apologise.
If you watch it, let me know what you think? I’m intrigued to find out if other people had the same reaction as me!
Much love,
Corrie xx
